MCard Short Film Competition 2014

Metro-Article

The beginning of a film-maker’s career can almost always be traced back to a short film. The careers of Wes Anderson, Sofia Coppola & F. Gary Gray all began when their shorts caught the eye of a producer or the attention of a big name. Inspired by the rapidly growing industry of short film-making, WYMetro and MCard have launched a competition for budding directors, producers or anyone handy with a camera.

The concept is to create a 10 sec to 3-minute film about absolutely anything, but it must feature bus and train travel and be set in West Yorkshire (where else?). So the scope for creativity is a big one. There’s no constraint on your technology usage, films can be made on your video camera or your smart phone. If you’re handy with pen, computer software or good old-fashioned clay models, then animations are also readily accepted. All the films will go before the panel of judges and there are lots of prizes and giveaways for the entrants.

If you need some help along the way MCard’s Facebook page will be updated regularly with hints and tips from local accomplished filmmakers. It’s also a useful way of connecting with other filmmakers in West Yorkshire and getting to know the scene.

As well as having a platform for your 3-minute masterpiece, MCard will also be giving away heaps of prizes to entrants. There will be spot prizes with cameras, vouchers and smart phones to nurture your film making talents. The overall prize is an evening at the Everyman Cinema, for up to 40 people. Your film will be screened, allowing you to swank off to your friends/enemies, before a film showing of your choice, fully catered with drinks and the Everyman’s famous Pizza. As well as all that, the first 20 people to enter get a week of free bus and rail travel.

All films and applications must be in by midnight on 11th of January and this is done through the MCard website www.mcard-promotions.co.uk.

Make sure you’re following MCard on Facebook and Twitter to get all the updates and see the latest entries.

There’s plenty of software to help you get to grips with animation, such as Blender. Its free animation software that will introduce you to the world of 3D animation.
